In total JEP(S) contains four components which are all installed by default:

JEP(S) Agent Connects to your Exchange 2007/2010/2013/2016 transport service to retrieve the session data and sends this to the JEP(S) Server. The same proven technology has been used for the agent as with the sink.
JEP(S) Sink Integrates into your existing SMTP service in Exchange 2000/2003/IIS to retrieve the session data and sends this to the JEP(S) Server. We've managed to make the sink highly efficient by optimizing the code and limiting its functionality to communication only. The effect of this is that potential problems elsewhere in your infrastructure won't affect the stability of the SMTP service and the solution is better scalable.
JEP(S) Server Runs as a service and answers queries from the sink as well as sending statistical data to the listener and generating graphical representations of the traffic. It handles all the database connectivity to either a local.mdb or a local / remote MS SQL server and makes use of the logging algorithms to determine the status of the incoming mail session.
JEP(S) Admin Is the administration utility that manages the sink and the server service. You can install and uninstall both the sinks and the service from here as well as controlling all parameters of the sink and service.
JEP(S) Listener Retrieves live data from the server and displays this in real time. The listener communicates over TCP/IP which means that this can be run from the comfort of your workstation.

JEP(S) supports static white lists based on either sender or recipient email addresses as well as source IP or IP ranges. Whenever a entry is matched against one of these lists then it will be automatically passed.
In addition to this it supports real time black and white lists (RBL & RWL). The usage of these is optional. By using real time lists JEP(S) will query an external source for known bad or good hosts and use this information in its algorithm to decide if the session should be blocked or passed.

Tunable parameters: (Items marked * can not be changed or are not available in the free version)

JEP(S) Sink and Agent - Incoming traffic

Sink timeout After this time the sink will stop waiting from the server and pass the session.
Sink priority Defines in what order the sink will intercept the session.
Mode Enable, disable and learning. With learning the sink will pass all incoming sessions but still log them on the server.
Tarpit Delay blocked sessions. Prevents directory harvesting attacks.
Pass through incoming authenticated sessions * Sessions that have authenticated will automatically be passed. Disabled in the free version.
Disconnect blocked sessions * Will disconnect a session if it's blocked. Default set to enabled in free version.
Message on greylist * The message the server will send to the remote mail server when a message is grey listed.
Message on blacklist * The message the server will send to the remote mail server when a message is black listed.
Qualifiers * Choose from what qualifiers to use, Source IP, Sender email and Recipient email. (All on is recommended)

JEP(S) Sink and Agent - Outbound traffic *

Auto white list When a mail is sent out the recipient will be white listed for a short time.
Sink priority Defines in what order the sink will intercept the session.

JEP(S) Server

Allowed characters Defines allowed characters for all sessions and for the database.
DB Connection string The connection parameters for the database connection.
Database type Local access database or SQL server.
Listen on interface * Localhost or all. Setting this to all makes it possible to have the sink or the listener on another host. Default set to local in free version.
Listen on port Defines what port incoming communications are accepted on.
Max age stale entries If activity hasn't been seen for x days for a triplet then remove it.
Min age before pass The minimum age this entry must have been known for before passing it.
Clean db How often should the database be maintained. This should be relatively low to prevent clogging.
Reload cache All lists are cached in memory. This entry specifies how often to check whether the cache needs to be updated
Auto whitelist valid If an outbound recipient has been white listed, how long is this entry valid.
Email address list * Contains all email addresses in your organization which can be loaded either by LDAP or from a file.
ARBL * Analyses incoming traffic for suspicious traffic. This is then sent to a central server for further analysis and blacklisting.
Graph * Generates several standard graphs every five minutes. You can also write an unlimited amount of own definitions which will be included in the generation.
Mail admin on event * Send the mail administrator an email with information about information, warning and error events.
